2020 Basketball Season
Basketball is one of the top sports at Special Olympics. Players take it up at all ages and at all abilities, from young players learning to handle the ball and keep it under control while dribbling to older, more experienced players who have the moves and know the strategies to play challenging ball. As with all of our sports, basketball is structured so that athletes compete with other athletes of similar ability in equitable divisions. The South Region Stars has several teams to allow greater participation.
As basketball is a TEAM SPORT, be aware that once the teams are formed only those players who plan to participate in the scheduled tournaments will be able to participate. This allows the teams to practice together as a “team”, which is essential to competition. (We do this for all team sports now!) We look forward to another great season of practices and tournaments!
PRACTICE
We will be posting practice information for basketball later in the season. This would be a good time to make sure that you have an up-to-date application on file with Special Olympics of Minnesota. This is necessary before you will be allowed to practice and compete. Remember, this needs to be updated every three years.
TIME and DATES and LOCATION
To Be Announced
TEAM ASSIGNMENT
Athletes will be assigned to teams on a first-come, first-serve, first-paid basis – so you must pay the $25 fee in order to be placed on a team. If the fee isn’t included with your registration form, you will not be placed on a team until the fee is paid
WE NEED COACHES!
If we do not have enough volunteers, we will need to ask family, friends or staff to assist with our teams, providing us an ability to accommodate everyone who registers. If we do not receive this help as needed, we will need to limit the number of players!!
SPECIAL ASSISTANCE
For safety purposes, athletes who are just beginning to play, are still learning, or have behavior problems MUST have a chaperone remain at the court throughout the practice.Athletes who are beginning players or who are still learning, MUST have their staff/parents stay at the field with them throughout the practice for safety reasons.
